Four Home Security Tips You Should Be Using

Posted on by Metro Lock & Safe Inc.

It is depressingly easy for most burglars and thieves to enter into most homes that they steal from. Statistics state that every fifteen seconds a burglar breaks into a home in the United States. The biggest casualty of these situations is not necessarily the money and goods that are stolen, but the peace of mind that is lost by the family who lives in the home. Use the following tips to help prevent your home from becoming one of millions that are burglarized every year.

Make Your Alarm Obvious

Each home should have a security alarm installed, but that’s not the only thing to consider when choosing a home alarm. Alarm systems work best when they are obvious. Choose an alarm that alerts you when your perimeter has been breached. Loud noises are especially effective at sending burglars scurrying off before they can do much damage.

Keep Your Plans Quiet

Don’t advertise when you plan to be gone from your home. Homeowners are particularly naïve with traveling plans. Social media gives you a chance to share vacation pictures and plans, but should only be done after you return home. Advertising where you will be and how long you will be gone offers a foolproof way for a burglar to enter your home without being noticed.

Hide Your Key Somewhere Scarce

The doormat has long ago been discovered as the typical place to hide that extra key. Other popular places to leave a spare key should not be used when you leave a key for someone to enter your house. Choose an original place to leave an extra key to your home, or try using a lockbox that requires a special code. Change the code every few months to avoid it getting into the wrong hands.

Use Light Timers

Burglars look for homes that are dark in order to be successful at their stealing attempt. They are working to go undetected, and darkness allows them to do this. If you are gone, set your lights on timers so they turn on even when you are not home. This gives the illusion of someone being home, and doesn’t give a burglar a chance to get into your home without being noticed. Burglars will stay away from homes that are well-lit, whether they are empty or occupied.

Home security is essential to allowing you and each member of your family to sleep well at night and feel safe in your home. Don’t risk having your house burglarized and losing the peace you feel when being home. Take the proper precautions to protect your family and your belongings inside your home.
